We’re thrilled to have received customer feedback from one of Australia’s leading theatrical movie distributors, Roadshow Films. In a recent session, our CTO Jonathan spoke to Jennifer Eagle, Email Lead, and Vincent Borg, Email Marketing executive. Jen handles communications planning & strategy, whilst Vincent, a relative newcomer to the team, handles subscriber outreach and contact nurturing, ultimately driving sales via DTV.
The real cost of outsourcing SQL
Jen explained that before DESelect, Roadshow Films regularly used data filters, and on more complicated projects, SQL queries were regularly outsourced to an external agency. This was turning out to be very costly and added more time to projects.
In fact, since Australia’s martech industry is still in relative infancy, SQL query services are rare and thus costs are high at around $800 AUS per hour. This meant that Roadshow was spending anything from $500-$2,000 for the more complicated query sets.
In stark contrast to the situation six months ago, Jen was happy to report that since fully adopting DESelect, Roadshow has barely needed to engage external SQL resources.
A welcome tool for junior marketers
Speaking of his experience as a relative newcomer to the marketing team (and as a marketer), Vincent explained that as a former creative and graphic designer, he has no technical background or experience in SQL. Since this really doesn’t matter when using DESelect, he enjoyed the visual-friendliness of our tool.
So far so good, as Vincent expressed his enjoyment in using DESEelect and looks forward to using it again.
In discussing Roadshow’s on-boarding process, Jen explained that she needed very little training, thanks to the tool being very intuitive and easy to use.
Due to the pandemic’s impact on the team’s working environment, Vincent had somewhat of a trial by fire, whereby his DESelect on-boarding combined his introduction to the tool with a live project! We’re happy to report that it was straightforward and pain-free.

Having had to liaise with our support team only a couple of times, Jen was pleased to report that she found the team to be great and quick.
No more SQL
Jen talked a little about how Roadshow first discovered DESelect while struggling with issues and costs surrounding SQL. According to Jen, they were delighted to find that DESelect was exactly what they needed, to avoid wasting any more time on Excel spreadsheets or external resources.
Both Vincent and Jen were more than happy to recommend us. We were especially pleased that Vincent — a newcomer to marketing — found our tool so easy to use.
